Interpreter Training

Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center offers residents of the central Shenandoah Valley and surrounding areas two interpreter training programs. These training programs help ensure that all community members  have access to clear and accurate communication with their health and human service providers.

The main program, Health Care Interpreting, utilizes the nationally-recognized "Bridging the Gap" curriculum to train qualified bilingual persons to become specialized professional interpreters in medical and other health care settings. This training is generally offered twice a year.

The second program, “Introduction to Community Interpreting,” trains bilingual persons already employed in public settings such as school systems, social services, and government agencies to effectively interpret in their workplace.  This training is scheduled as significant need is identified.

All applicants must pass a language proficiency exam in English and in their target language in order to qualify for the training programs.
